Flat-Backed 6" Piquin Chile "Regalito" Ristra
The classic symbol of New Mexico, in miniature
Featuring hand-tied piquin chiles and a flat-back for easy wall hanging
New Mexicans have hung roja chile pimiento
ristras (Spanish for "red chili pepper strings") for centuries. As you drive
around our state, you see ristras hanging practically everywhere...they're
one of the most common symbols of the "Land of Enchantment."
While their original purpose was simply to
allow fresh chiles to dry so they could be ground and used as seasoning, legend
has it that a ristra hung outside your front door keeps out devils and brings
good luck. Today, the most common use for ristras is simply for colorful and
inexpensive decorations. During the Holidays, shiny, bright red chile pepper
ristras and wreaths are often used as a beautiful
Southwestern alternative to holly and poinsettias.
- Ristras are commonly topped with a
corn husk for decoration; a string loop allows for easy hanging.
- Our ristras are made only from the
peppers grown for centuries in the Mesilla Valley region of southern New
Mexico...home of the famous Hatch chiles.
- Each of our ristras has been
treated by the farmer by spraying red-tinted lacquer on the chiles. They
are not edible, but they will maintain their shape and color considerably
longer than fresh ristras...up to 5 years in drier climates, 2-3 years in
humid climates.
- Unlike fresh ristras, our treated
ristras will not drip dangerous chile juice, attract fruit flies, or
become moldy.

Remember:
- Ristras are hand-tied from
various-sized chiles; the ristra you receive may therefore vary slightly
from the photos
- Ristras are very delicate: it is
natural for them to lose a few chiles during shipment. Be very careful
when handling
- Unless otherwise indicated, all
ristra orders ship within one business day from our Taos, NM store
- If you don't like it, don't keep
it: We offer one of the best return policies
in the business
